Submaximal Eccentric Cycling in People With COPD

چکیده
Background Eccentric cycling (ECC) may be an attractive exercise method in COPD because of both low cardiorespiratory demand and perception effort compared with conventional concentric (CON) at matched mechanical loads. However, it is unknown whether ECC can performed by individuals intensity able to cause sufficient metabolic stress improve aerobic capacity. Research Question What are the cardiopulmonary responses people healthy volunteers when CON loads? Study Design Methods Thirteen (mean ± SD age, 64 9 years; FEV1, 45 19% predicted; BMI, 24 4 kg/m2; oxygen uptake peak [V?O2peak], 15 3 mL/kg/min) age-matched control participants (FEV1, 102 13% 28 5 V?O2peak, 23 mL/kg/min), up six 4-min bouts loads increasing intensity. In addition, 12 underwent quadriceps muscle biopsies before after 20 min 65% power. Results At loads, uptake, minute ventilation, heart rate, systolic BP, respiratory exchange ratio (all P < .001), capillary lactate, perceived breathlessness, leg fatigue (P .05) were lower groups during than CON. Muscle lactate content increased = .008) phosphocreatine decreased .012) COPD, which was not evident ECC. Interpretation Cardiopulmonary blood submaximal less equivalent workloads patients, this confirmed a level patients. Submaximal well tolerated allowed greater work ventilatory cost. training intervention based on unlikely stimulate cardiovascular adaptation same extent as

Cerebrovascular responses to submaximal exercise in women with COPD
BACKGROUND COPD patients have decreased physical fitness, and have an increased risk of vascular disease. In the general population, fitness is positively associated with resting cerebral blood flow velocity, however, little is known about the cerebrovascular response during exercise particularly in COPD patients. We hypothesized that COPD patients would have lower cerebral blood flow during ex...
متن کاملDeterminants of metabolic cost during submaximal cycling.
The metabolic cost of producing submaximal cycling power has been reported to vary with pedaling rate. Pedaling rate, however, governs two physiological phenomena known to influence metabolic cost and efficiency: muscle shortening velocity and the frequency of muscle activation and relaxation. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relative influence of those two phenomena on me...
متن کاملIncreases in submaximal cycling efficiency mediated by altitude acclimatization.
To investigate the hypothesis that respiratory gas exchange and, in particular, the O(2) consumption (VO(2)) response to exercise is altered after a 21-day expedition to 6,194 m, five male climbers (age 28.2 +/- 2 yr; weight 76.9 +/- 4.3 kg; means +/- SE) performed a progressive and prolonged two-step cycle test both before and 3-4 days after return to sea level. During both exercise tests, a d...
متن کاملJoint-specific power production during submaximal and maximal cycling.
UNLABELLED Separate authors have reported that knee extension dominates power production during submaximal cycling (SUB(cyc)) and hip extension is the dominant action during maximal cycling (MAX(cyc)). Changes in joint-specific powers across broad ranges of net cycling powers (P(net)) within one group of cyclists have not been reported. PURPOSE Our purpose was to determine the extent to which...
متن کاملRecruitment of single muscle fibers during submaximal cycling exercise.
In literature, an inconsistency exists in the submaximal exercise intensity at which type II fibers are activated. In the present study, the recruitment of type I and II fibers was investigated from the very beginning and throughout a 45-min cycle exercise at 75% of the maximal oxygen uptake, which corresponded to 38% of the maximal dynamic muscle force. Biopsies of the vastus lateralis muscle ...
